Bergamo information
Bergamo is located in the heart of Lombardy region in northern Italy, at the foothills of the Alps. Bergamo is divided into two parts: the lower city, erected onto a plateau containing the most modern buildings, and the upper city erected on the top of an hill, containing the oldest buildings and the most interesting monuments and shops for tourists. Lower and upper cities are connected by narrow roads, stairs and also by a cable car.

The most important monuments located in Bergamo upper city are the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Saint Mary Major) started around year 1130 a.c. but finished and modified frequently during the subsequent centuries. This church contains well preserved frescos, sculptures and a beautiful facade. The "Palazzo della Ragione" was built during the 12th century and was the main administration center of the region, but now it hosts a museum with a selection of paintings Accademia Carrara. The "Rocca" (Castle) was built starting from 14th century and completed later by Azzone Visconti. In the oldest parts of Bergamo, you can find dozens of shops specialized into excellent typical food, with annexed restaurants offering also excellent wines.

From Bergamo you can easily reach many other important cities in northern Italy, as well as interesting spots for nature and landscape. Val Brembana valley is located just a few kilometers north of Bergamo, between the pre-Alps mountains: from here there are trails of different lengths, letting to appreciate the life of small mountain communities as well as beautiful views onto the majestic Alps. Iseo lake, another very interesting spot because of the nature and the architecture of the smaller towns, lies just 25 kilometers east of Bergamo, while Garda Lake, with its well known Gardaland theme park, is a little bit more to the east, about 90 kilometers from Bergamo. For people going to, or coming from Milan, Bergamo Orio al Serio airport may be even more convenient than Milano Malpensa airport (MXP) because the actual distance is similar (about 50 kilometers), but the linking is provided with an 8 lanes highway, generally less crowded than the highway between Milan and Milan Malpensa (the expected travel time is about one hour).
