Catania information
Catania is located in Sicily island just south of Etna volcano and along the shores of Mediterranean sea. Excellent cuisine and many attractions awaits for you in and around Catania, making Catania an excellent base for tours in Sicily.

You may start your tour of Catania from Duomo square (Piazza Duomo) where, on the eastern side of the square, the beautiful St. Agata cathedral (Catania cathedral) is located. This cathedral was originally built during years 1078-1093, but was frequently rebuilt during subsequent centuries due to damages arising from earthquakes and Etna volcano eruptions. The external facade was designed in brilliant baroque style by Gian Battista Vaccarini, an italian architect, after an earthquake happened in 1693; the interior have a nave and two aisles ending into an altar. St. Francis of Assisi is another interesting church having on its back a Greek-Roman amphitheater coming from 2nd century, but countless churches can be found throughout the city. The Elephant fountain (Fontana dell'Elefante) is the main symbol of Catania, built during the reconstruction of Catania after the 1693 earthquake, and is made mainly of volcanic stones coming from solidified Etna's lava. Catania is also known in Italy and through the world, because the music composer Vincenzo Bellini was born here; a square, a museum and an opera theatre is dedicated to him. But beside the arts and culture, Catania is also well known its cuisine, offering dishes unique in Italy, like "Pasta alla Norma" made with a kind of smaller macaroni (penne), tomato sauce, aubergines and salted "ricotta".

Beyond Catania you will find several amazing places unique in Italy, for their history and landscape. Etna, one of the world's most active volcano, is just a few kilometers to the north; trails are available to explore dramatic remains from ancient eruptions and, with a bit of luck, it's also sometimes possible to observe fresh lava flows. For the most fitted people, a trek to Etna volcano's summit, about 3200 meters above sea level, offers a spectacular bird eye view over Sicily island and a "Dante's Inferno view" over smoking craters and calderas. More to the south and to the east, Ragusa, Siracusa (Syracuse) and Agrigento, are interesting cities hosting ruins from greek and roman periods, all deserving a visit during your stay in Sicily. To the north you will find instead Messina harbor and Milazzo harbor offering respectively ferry to Italy's mainland and to the spectacular Aeolian Islands (Volcano, Lipari, Salina, Stromboli, Panarea, etc.).
