| Pisa information |
Pisa is the city known in the world for its leaning tower (Torre di Pisa) but the surprises offered by Pisa are not limited just to this monument, as many hidden treasures can be found walking in the medieval streets. Pisa is also an excellent base for visiting Tuscany region with its cities well known for arts and culture like Florence, Lucca, Siena, Carrara, as well as for the countryside hosting some of the most important vineyards in Italy.
You may start your tour of Pisa from the world's famous Miracle Square (Piazza dei Miracoli), known also as Cathedral Square (Piazza del Duomo) and hosting the impressive leaning tower, together with a cathedral, a baptistery and a monumental cemetery (Campo Santo). The construction of the monument complex begun with the cathedral back in year 1062 by the architect Busketo, to continue in the next centuries with the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the other monuments. Although Miracle Square is very famous all over the world, Pisa has many additional treasures to be discovered for everybody interested in arts and culture. Knights’ Square (Piazza dei Cavalieri) is the second largest square in Pisa and was the main political center during the medieval period; now the square hosts an important university and beautiful palaces. Santa Maria della Spina is a miniature church erected in year 1230 along the shores of Arno river and is considered to be one of the most beautiful examples of gothic architecture in Europe. The facade of Santa Maria della Spina is amazingly made entirely in marble. But many treasures awaits to be discovered around Pisa too. The city of Lucca, just 25 kilometers away, has fantastic medieval squares and buildings, while Florence, about 80 kilometers to the east doesn't need any presentation. And what to say about Carrara and the amazing, still productive marble caves, that can be visited by guided tours. In addition, Pisa is also an excellent base for winery tours in Tuscany, choosing one of the many agritourisms structures (farms with overnight and restaurant facilities) available throughout the region.
